Polio an infectious disease caused by polio virus, that lives in throat and intestinal tract mostly affecting children under the age of five. Two types of vaccine protect against polio: inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). OPV not been used in the United States since 2000 but is still used in many parts of the world including India. OPV recommended for global polio eradication activities in polio-endemic countries for its advantages over IPV. Recently India also introduced IPV in its universal immunization program in three phases, starting with high risk states. With tangible phases to increase quality, usage and even headedness of routine immunization services, Indian Govt. has taken creditable steps to introduce IPV and to make it success.
