
Chronic leg ulcers are most commonly caused by venous insufficiency (45-60%), arterial insufficiency (10-20%), diabetes (15-25%), reported in various literatures conducted in various countries in different parts of the world. Indian population based study for etiological factors involved in chronic leg ulcer are rare. Sixty four patients with leg ulcers more than six weeks duration in an Indian hospital were evaluated for the etiological factors associated with leg ulcers. Male were found to be more affected than females. Arterial disease was most common etiology of chronic leg ulcer in our study, followed by diabetes, exogenous and traumatic factors, venous disease and multifactorial causes. Leg ulcers due to malignancy and other miscellaneous causes like infection, neuropathies are rare. Smoking was associated with all arterial ulcers.
